Duhsantis and His Series of Unfortunate Events

Anyone who's witnessed the rapid decline of Twitter saw this coming long before Florida's governor did. Plus: Thou shalt not post Ten Commandments in schools. And: Picketing with the Star Trek Stars

Good morning, and welcome back to RiseUP on this Thursday, May 25, 2023! As the song goes, it’s been a long road, getting from there (L.A.) to here (Connecticut). But I’m now finally recovered from jet lag and that inexplicable “I need a vacation to recover from my vacation” feeling.

On this day in 1787, four years after winning independence, the founding fathers met in Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention. It would take almost two years of debate and amendments to become the law of the land.

A more familiar gathering occurred a long time ago at theaters far, and near, on this day in 1977: movie fans lined up for the premiere of Star Wars.

45 years ago, George Lucas peaked with the least Star Wars-esque movie ever

And this was the day in 2020 that a Black man named George Floyd was killed by white Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck until he could no longer breathe. His murder, captured on video, was one of several incidents of racial injustice that inspired protests worldwide that summer, and reignited long overdue — and still incomplete —efforts to reform the U.S. criminal justice system and address embedded racism. The New York Times has a video analysis of Floyd’s murder that you can watch by clicking here.
