Ten years ago today, I covered the culmination of perhaps the most unique news story of my career: the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. It was early in the morning of Feb. 11, 2013 that the pontiff first announced, through a Vatican statement — in Latin, no less — that he would be quitting, something no pope had done in 600+ years. At that time, I was the overnight national assignment editor at ABC News, and the toughest part was convincing bosses what we had learned was accurate! “Popes can’t quit.. can they?” Then on the 28th: Benedict stepped down. He died on Dec. 31, 2022, at the age of 95.

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill taking over control of Central Florida’s Reedy Creek Improvement District, home of Walt Disney World, at a firehouse just outside the “Most Magical Place on Earth.”
Then, Florida’s Republican governor declared, “There’s a new sheriff in town!” Wait, why would a sheriff be at… a firehouse? Never mind.
