Are You Lonesome Tonight?
This week, the U.S. Surgeon General will propose a national effort to address loneliness and encourage connections. Plus: The worst drinks for your health. And: Are you ready for the return of Stefon?
Thanks for checking out tonight’s edition of Bedtime Stories before turning in on this Sunday, the last day of April 2023. It was on this date in 1841 that Edgar Allan Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue, considered the world’s first detective story, was published. In 1999, two high school students killed 13 people at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. And the explosion aboard the Gulf of Mexico oil rig Deepwater Horizon killed 11 people and created the largest offshore oil spill in American history on this date in 2010.

SURGEON GENERAL: WE HAVE BECOME A LONELY NATION. IT’S TIME TO FIX THAT — In a very personal essay, Vice Adm. Vivek H. Murthy, M.D. announced his plan to address loneliness across the nation:
“This week, for the first time, I will be proposing a national framework to rebuild social connection and community in America.
“Loneliness is more than just a bad feeling. When people are socially disconnected, their risk of anxiety and depression increases.
“So does their risk of heart disease (29%), dementia (50%), and stroke (32%).
“The increased risk of premature death associated with social disconnection is comparable to smoking daily — and may be even greater than the risk associated with obesity.” Read his plan in the NYT
