THREE CHILDREN AMONG SIX KILLED IN NASHVILLE SCHOOL SHOOTING: The Tennesean
Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney were reported to be 9-years old. Scruggs was the daughter of a local pastor. Also murdered were the head of the school, Katherine Koonce, 60, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61 and custodian Mike Hill, also 61. —The New York Times and ABC News
This happened Monday at The Covenant School, a private Christian school in one of Nashville’s wealthiest neighborhoods.
Police say the gunman was a former student who was carrying two assault rifles, a handgun and “significant ammunition.” He entered the school through a side entrance and immediately began shooting. He also fired upon arriving police. Two officers who entered the school shot and killed the shooter.
Police identified the 28-year-old gunman by the name he was given at birth, Audrey Hale, and did not provide another name. Hale was a transgender man, meaning he was presumed to be female at birth, but as an adult, he used male pronouns. The police misgendered him, identifying him as a woman, as did most every media report. —The Tennesean
Police used explosives to enter the home Hale shared with his father, where they say they found more weapons, a map and a manifesto. According to police, he had done a threat assessment of the school’s security measures, as well as that of another school where security was more stringent. —WSMV and NYT
So far this year, the Gun Violence Archive has counted 130 mass shootings in the United States. Last year, the group counted 647. Of those, 21 involved five or more fatalities. —NYT
