Nebraska GOP's Plan to Enact Abortion Ban: Make It A Combo
Lawmakers will vote on a combination of an anti-abortion bill with an anti-trans measure to get both passed. Plus: Reviewers roast Sen. Josh Hawley's "Manhood." And: J.K. Rowling endorses bigotry.
Good morning and thanks for rising up with me on this Tuesday, May 16, 2023. On this day in 1918, the Sedition Act was passed, and who would have guessed it would be needed a little more than a century later after an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol?
Hollywood hosted the first Academy Awards on this day in 1929. The Jazz Singer was eliminated from consideration because, as a “talkie,” it was seen as an unfair competitor to silent films of the day. Get this: The winners of the awards were announced in advance! Charlie Chaplin won an honorary Oscar.
And Barbara Walters signed off for the last time on this day in 2014. The longtime TV news journalist was 84. Walters died at age 93 on Dec. 30, 2022.
Here Now the News
THEY’RE 'ALL IN;’ NEBRASKA CONSERVATIVES’ GAMBLE TO ENACT SWEEPING LEGISLATION: The Associated Press calls it “an all-or-nothing bet:” Merging two of this legislative session’s most contentious proposals into one bill: One to restrict abortion and another that would ban gender-affirming care for minors.
The unconventional move follows conservatives’ failure by a single vote last month to advance a bill that would have banned abortion at around six weeks of pregnancy. Now, conservatives are backing an effort to amend the transgender health bill to include restricting abortion to 12 weeks of gestation.
The strategy sets up a vote today that could give conservatives a win on both abortion and trans health bans — or could see them lose both. —A.P.
I strongly recommend you subscribe to Jessica Valenti’s important Substack, Abortion, Every Day, which is how I learned about Nebraska! She also tells the heartbreaking story of yet another woman who developed sepsis after being denied an abortion for a doomed pregnancy. It happened in Texas, and you need to read and share her story.

Rolling Stone calls the sexual assault allegations, “graphic.”
THE DURHAM REPORT ON THE FBI INVESTIGATION OF DONALD TRUMP: This complex look at the Russia probe is worth reading. —The New York Times
“While it did sharply criticize the FBI and the origins of the Russia-Trump probe, Durham's report concluded without sending a single person to prison, falling far short of the inflated expectations set in the Trump-friendly press. In fact, after millions of dollars were spent on the years-long investigation, Durham only ultimately secured the conviction of a low-level FBI lawyer who avoided serving jail time.” —Oliver Darcy in CNN Reliable Sources newsletter
