Good morning and thanks for rising up with me on this Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023. So much history happened on this day, some of it carrying over from yesterday’s newsletter, like Gerald Ford becoming president and the Cubs winning their first-ever night baseball game, that I’ll just provide quick links in today’s edition so you can peruse on your own and we can get to the news!
On This Day:
JESSE OWENS WINS HIS 4TH OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL: The 23-year-old from Cleveland was one of 17 African Americans competing in Nazi Germany at the 1936 Olympic Games.
U.S. DROPS 2nd ATOMIC BOMB ON SHIPBUILDING CENTER IN NAGASAKI: Up to 80,000 people were instantly incinerated and led to Japan’s emperor agreeing to an unconditional surrender in 1945.
MEMBERS OF CHARLES MANSON CULT KILL 5: Actress Sharon Tate was among those murdered in the Beverly Hills home of her husband, Roman Polanski, on this day in 1969. Tate was pregnant.
THE DEATH OF JERRY GARCIA OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD: It happened today in 1995. Garcia was just 53 and died of a heart attack at a drug rehab facility in Northern California.
MICHAEL BROWN MURDERED BY WHITE POLICE OFFICER IN FERGUSON: The unarmed Black teen was shot by Officer Darren Wilson, who was never charged and claimed self-defense. Days of protest marches and a heavily-militarized police response put the Missouri town at the center of the Black Lives Matter movement, which was just beginning to gain momentum in 2014.
FED-UP FLIGHT ATTENDANT QUITS VIA EMERGENCY SLIDE: Steven Slater told Jet Blue passengers on this day in 2010: “I’ve been in this business for twenty years. And that’s it. I’ve had it. I’m done.”
Here Now the News:
TRUMP’S PLOT TO OVERTURN ELECTION LAID-OUT IN 2020 MEMO: The New York Times
OHIO VOTERS RESOUNDINGLY REJECT CHANGES PROPOSED BY GOP: The Republican-backed measure would have made it more difficult to change Ohio’s constitution, but the actual goal was to make it harder for a referendum on reproductive rights to pass this November.
The defeat of Issue 1 keeps in place a simple majority threshold for passing future constitutional amendments, rather than the 60% supermajority that was proposed.
Voter opposition to the proposal was widespread, even spreading into traditionally Republican territory. In fact, in early returns, support for the measure fell far short of former President Donald Trump’s performance during the 2020 election in nearly every county. —Associated Press
