Judge rules trans woman athlete must be allowed to compete with other women
JayCee Cooper won a landmark lawsuit proving USA Powerlifting discriminated against her. Plus the drugmaker slashing prices on insulin, and the latest anti-drag crusader caught, yup, doing drag
Thanks for rising up with me on this Thursday, March 2, 2023. Today is Claudette Colvin Day, named for the 83-year-old woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Ala., on this day in 1955. She was 15, and it was nine months before Rosa Parks followed her example. In 2021, Colvin fought to get her name cleared, the record of her arrest expunged, and won. Her story is here.
Here Now the News:
JUDGE RULES USA POWERLIFTING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST TRANS WOMAN ATHLETE: In a huge victory for transgender athletes, a judge in Minnesota ruled USAPL illegally discriminated against JayCee Cooper and ordered the national sports body to immediately stop barring trans athletes from competing according to their gender identity. More details in my story for the Los Angeles Blade.
LANDMARK RULING: Ramsey County District Judge Patrick Diamond ordered USAPL to revise its discriminatory policies within two weeks, to allow trans women to compete with cisgender women athletes.
IT’S ONLY “FAIR:” USA Powerlifting has previously argued that they ban transgender women from participating due to “fairness.” The organization claimed trans women have developmental advantages, “including but not limited to increased body and muscle mass, bone density, bone structure, and connective tissue.” USAPL has not responded to my request for comment about the judge’s decision.
FOR THE RECORD: As I noted in my report, PinkNews reported in January that a new study commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport found trans women do not have any advantages over any other women, when competing in elite sport. So there ya go.

OUT WRESTLER BUSTED ON GUN CHARGE DAYS AFTER ENGAGEMENT: Sonya DeVille, whose real name is Daria Berenato, was reportedly arrested in Atlantic City on Feb. 19 for unlawful weapon possession. A casino valet found the gun in her car’s glove box… which raises the question, what was he doing in her glove compartment, anyway? Berenato registered the gun in her home state of Florida, but didn’t have a permit to bring it to New Jersey. The wrestler reportedly bought the gun after she was the victim of a horrific home invasion in 2020. —Cageside Seats

ABOVE THE FOLD: Unlike The New York Times, which has been accused of anti-trans bias, the Washington Post is clearly paying attention to what’s happening to the transgender community. A prominent story about anti-trans legislation appeared at the very top of its site Thursday morning: “New state bills restrict transgender health care — for adults,” is the headline. “Until now, most legislation banning gender-affirming care targeted minors. This year, a growing number of bills would also limit access for adults.” —Washington Post
