POLL SHOWS AMERICANS DIVIDED ON WHETHER TRUMP DID ANYTHING WRONG: The survey by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research was conducted before Monday’s charges in the Georgia case. It shows that about half of Americans — 53% — approve of the Justice Department indicting Trump over his efforts to remain in office after losing the 2020 election. The poll finds 85% of Democrats approve of the criminal charges brought Aug. 2 by Special Counsel Jack Smith, compared with 47% of independents and just 16% of Republicans. Overall, 3 in 10 Americans disapprove, including about two-thirds of Republicans.—A.P.
EVEN MANY REPUBLICANS CONCEDE TRUMP GUILTY OF SOMETHING: 1 in 5 or fewer Americans told the pollsters they believed Trump did “nothing wrong” in each of his four legal cases. Of his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, 21 percent said he did “nothing wrong.” In both the classified documents case and the Georgia case , it was 15 percent. And just 14 percent said Trump did “nothing wrong” in the Manhattan case involving an alleged cover-up of hush money payments.

TRANSGENDER WOMEN NOW BANNED FROM COMPETING IN CHESS TOURNAMENTS: The world’s foremost international chess organization has introduced guidelines that would revoke titles from transgender men and bar many transgender women from competing, asserting that trans women “have no right to participate.” —Erin Reed via the Los Angeles Blade
CHARLOTTE CLYMER WRITES: To be clear: there is no evidence that boys and men have a biological advantage in chess. None. Zilch. The belief that girls and women can’t compete with boys and men in chess is deeply rooted in sexism. It holds no water.
I repeat: the reason girls and women are rare at the most elite level of competitive chess is not because of biological aptitude but because of very low rates of participation due to a lack of social support.
I have been playing competitive chess (tournament chess), off and on, since I was a 12 year-old in 6th grade. I won probably a dozen or so tournaments when I was a kid, including a state championship. I am also a trans woman, and I’m telling y’all: trans women do not enjoy a particular advantage in chess ability. —Charlotte’s Web Thoughts
